📈 Ranking all 32 backup quarterbacks in the NFL
We stacked the best No. 2 quarterbacks across the league, including Mac Jones and even a few backups who have already been forced to play in 2026.
The NFL is a quarterback-driven league, and while the starters get most of the attention, a strong backup QB can be the difference between a good team and a great one. With injuries and inconsistent play inevitably affecting teams throughout the season, having a reliable No. 2 quarterback is crucial. This ranking of all 32 backup quarterbacks gives fans and analysts alike a better understanding of the league's depth at the position.
Mac Jones, a former starter himself, being listed as a top backup quarterback speaks to his value and potential impact if called upon. The fact that some backups have already been forced to play in 2026 highlights the importance of having a solid plan in place for when the starter goes down. This is especially true for teams with playoff aspirations, as a strong backup can help keep momentum going and make a team's chances of advancing more competitive.
As the season heats up, keep an eye on how these backup quarterbacks perform if they're called upon. Will they be able to maintain their team's level of play, or will they struggle to fill the shoes of their starter? Additionally, watch for teams that may be looking to upgrade their backup QB situation via trade or free agency, and how that might impact their overall roster construction and chances of success.
